Sew a Free Doll Bonnet

Advertisements

Recently, I’ve been trying out some of the old Pleasant Company doll Clothes patterns to make some new fashions for our American Girl dolls. Our frontier girl, Kirsten, was in need of a new sun bonnet to protect her delicate skin from the sun. We buy many of our American Girl dolls used, so they often don’t come with all of their accessories and outfit pieces. For this project I used a free pattern from the original Kirsten’s Pretty Clothes patterns available for free download on AG Playthings. The instructions were kind of vague and left me a bit perplexed at a couple steps, so I thought I’d make a video tutorial for anyone else that decides to use the pattern.

I’m definitely a beginner sewer, but I try. I dream of having endless hours to sew up new projects and get better, but it just doesn’t fit in my life right now. The fact that I was able to sew up three of these over the course of 3 days goes to show that this is a pretty quick and easy project.

Cutting and Laying Out Fabric

For this project you will need 1/4 yard of cotton fabric. I also recommend a piece of lightweight interfacing for the brim to keep it from being too floppy. In the original patterns, it shows how to layout the pattern pieces, but keep in mind you will also need 2 strips of fabric that measure 2”x12” for the bonnet straps, so make space for those on your fabric as well. In addition, you need one 5” long piece of 1/4” wide elastic and matching thread.

Supplies needed (plus one piece of lightweight interfacing for the brim that I forgot to take a photo of—oops!)
