With the announcement of the new American Girl baby for dolls, we’ve been having tinsy baby fever! The doll baby was released March 31, 2021 and is super cute in pictures, which means it’s probably more adorable in person! We’re exploring some details of the new bundle and checking out budget friendly alternatives that might work well too.
Some details about the new American Girl baby:
- Retail cost is $48, 18” doll not included.
- Product specs are not on their website, but based on the pictures it looks like baby could be about 7-8 inches tall.
- Baby has brown hair, medium-light skin, and pink clothing. Currently there are no other options for gender, hair color, or skin tone. Boo. Perhaps AG is waiting to see popularity before releasing other variations?
- Baby comes with a high chair, diaper change necessities, food and bottle, and a babysitting guide mini book.
Alternative 18” Doll Sized Babies
If spending nearly $50 on a tinsy baby isn’t your thing, here are some alternatives that might work great.
Walmart — My Sweet Love babies
- Retails for $2.88! In store only.
- 8” tall, with a variety of hair colors and clothes (but still only white skin??)
- No accessories, not quite as realistic looking.
Walmart — My Sweet Loves Lil Cuties Doll
Okay, this one is our favorite. I don’t always see it at our local Walmart, but that pouty face and baby rolls are swoon worthy.
- Retails for $3.97, in store and online!
- 5.5 inches tall, more infant like than the others.
- Realistic looking faces, sits without support (what a strong baby!), variety of eye colors.
- Clothing not as realistic for a baby, some have a little tattoo on their face, which might be removed with non-acetone nail polish remover.
Target — Perfectly Cute babies
- Retails for $3.99-$19.99, depending on the set.
- 8” tall. Variety of hair color and skin tones! (Thanks, Target!)
- Super cute accessories available including baby seat, tub, crib, and feeding items.
